Flyers are a reliable marketing tool. They are economical, flexible, easy to produce, digest and distribute. All ideal for local campaigns and organisations without a large marketing budget.

Whether used to promote an organisation or a one off event, effective flyers can be designed if the following is taken into consideration.

  • Keep the recipient in mind and focus on the benefits. Your flyer isn’t a business card. Your potential customers aren’t interested in your name. They’re not even interested in what you do. They’re interested in their own needs and wants. How are you going to address those?
  •

  • Don’t complicate things. A powerful and simple visual design that will attract attention and communicate with the audience is required. The flyer has to be readable and the information on it needs to be easy to digest.
  •

  • Almost as important, the flyer has to attract attention. While remaining easy to read, the flyer should be as bold and as innovative as the branding allows. A strong overall visual impact is more important than any individual elements.
  •

  • Pick your fonts carefully. Using several is a useful way to draw the eye to where it needs to be. Using too many is confusing and can look unprofessional.
  •

  • Use a call to action. Again, this isn’t a business card and raising awareness isn’t enough. After you have won the attention of your reader, what action do you want them to take? If you haven’t made it obvious and as easy as possible, you haven’t produced an effective flyer.
